Connecting Your Team to Your Project

Understanding the SBIR Proposal Review Process

Imagine it’s time to change your car’s oil and you need to select a mechanic. One shows up with a jack, oil, catch pans, filters, and wrenches. Another shows up saying they’ll be ready if you hire them. Both mechanics might be competent, but you are likely to pick the one that seems to have the tools for the job. An experienced SBIR grant writer knows NIH SBIR proposal reviewers do the same thing when they scrutinize an application. When an application can demonstrate that the team has the tools and capability to get the project completed, it increases the likelihood that the application will be approved.

Demonstrating Team Readiness for an SBIR/STTR Project

How can your team show that it is ready?  Strong timelines and milestones will demonstrate that your team has the planning strength needed to complete an SBIR/STTR Phase I or Phase II project. Beyond planning, however, your team needs to demonstrate that it has the technical skills to complete the proposed project. Part of this readiness will be demonstrated through letters of from key consultants and partners. You must also describe the skills and experiences of your team as it applies to the accomplishing of tasks and milestones. Add to this your team’s knowledge about the market your product will be entering, and you are well on your way to demonstrating to an SBIR grant reviewer that your team is ready to get to work.
